About Jimmy
James Robert Giroux was born on June 2, 2003 (Grannie's birthday is June 2, too!). Jimmy was named after his maternal grandfather, the late Raymond James Halnon, Sr., and his uncle, the late Robert (Bobby) Giroux. Jimmy lives in Colchester, Vermont with his parents Jennifer and Rick Giroux, and his brothers Ricky, age 9, and Joey, age 6. In February 2004 Jimmy was diagnosed with acute myelomonocytic leukemia, a subtype (M4) of myeloid leukemia. Jimmy was hospitalized on February 24, 2004 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont, where he received three rounds of intensive treatments of chemotherapy and numerous intrathecals. That treatment was not enough, therefore Jimmy went to Children's Hospital in Boston where he received a bone marrow transplant on July 6, 2004 (Joey's 5th birthday).
Jimmy, Jen, Rick, Ricky, Joey, and Grannie (Cathy Halnon, Jen's amazing and irreplaceable Mom) went to Boston on June 23, 2004. It was a terrifying, bur more importantly, a successful trip. Jimmy has remained in remission since his bone marrow transplant, and is doing absolutely beautifully. Jimmy's precious donor wrote to the family and wishes to remain in contact with them, and to meet them as soon as the waiting period is up. Hopefully, someday, Jimmy can look into the eyes of the man who gave him a second chance at life, by giving him his precious marrow.
Jimmy has been incredibly brave throughout his very difficult treatment. Jimmy's courage through it all makes him our little hero! Jimmy has been called "delicate, but mighty" and we think this describes him perfectly!
